Learning FUN Ideas

Enjoy these activity ideas for lots of FUN learning:

    1. Weather Report: Inspire young meteorologists! Each day, ask one student to deliver the weather report. Start by having the student update the Days of the Week Chart marking the correct Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow. Then, have them describe today's weather to the class, adjusting the dial on the weather chart, temperature chart, and wind chart. Students can describe how it feels outside, what they see, and the best way to dress for the day's weather and why. Extend the learning by sparking discussions about different climates around the world.

    2. Make a Holiday: Help learners understand the concept of a holiday by making one of their own. Have students work in small groups to create a new holiday of their choice. As students brainstorm together, they should decide on a name, a date, a symbol, and why and how the holiday will be celebrated. They can also decide whether this holiday would be local or national. Finally, the groups each design a poster depicting the celebration to use when they present their ideas to the class.

    3. Calendar Scramble: Get everyone out of their seats and thinking about the days of the week and months of the year. Shuffle the 12 monthly headers and choose 12 students to give one of the months. On your command, challenge them to arrange themselves in January - December order as fast as they can. Record the time it takes the group, then select another group to go. For an added challenge, have students start with the current month.

    4. Heritage Months: Take advantage of monthly themes to expand your social studies curriculum. Form groups of three or four students to research different cultural topics. Topics might include foods, lifestyles, celebrations, traditions, geographic locations, and contributions. Challenge students to present their findings in creative ways. Some themes to get students started: September is National Hispanic Heritage Month, November is Native American Heritage Month, February is Black History Month, and March is Women's History Month.
